These are my top four margarita recipes! The classic margarita recipe is simply tequila, lime juice and orange liqueur. Then, the "Tommy's Margarita" swaps out the orange liqueur for agave nectar. In these recipes, we're using both orange liqueur AND agave nectar (or alternative sweeteners)

What type of tequila is best in a margarita? It depends! I personally enjoy reposado tequilas because they tend to taste closer to my first love, bourbon. Reposado means that the tequila has been rested, often in wood barrels. But don't let my preference sway you- if you enjoy a blanco (or silver) tequila, use that! It's all about experimenting and finding the things you enjoy the most!
The Margarita's origins are a subject of some debate, but there are several popular theories. One widely accepted story traces the Margarita back to Mexico in the 1930s or 1940s. One legend suggests that it was created by a Mexican bartender named Carlos "Danny" Herrera. As the story goes, Herrera concocted the drink for a patron who was allergic to most spirits but not to tequila. He mixed tequila, lime juice, and triple sec, serving it in a salt-rimmed glass, thus giving birth to the Margarita.
Another story attributes the Margarita's creation to a Dallas socialite named Margarita Sames. In 1948, Sames purportedly mixed tequila, Cointreau, and lime juice for her guests at a party in Acapulco, Mexico. Her drink gained popularity, spreading its fame across borders.
Regardless of its precise origins, the Margarita quickly became a staple in bars and cocktail menus worldwide. The balance of tart, sweet, and a touch of saltiness made it an instant classic. Countless variations have emerged, including the four that come from my kitchen to yours: Watermelon Margarita, Hibiscus Margarita, Ube Margarita, Cucumber Mint Margarita.
