A strong relationship is built upon mutual respect, affection, and support. Positive sentiments while arguing can be as simple as acknowledging that your partner made a good point or empathizing with their emotional struggles. Obviously, when you’re fighting, you’re less inclined to give positive sentiments. The goal isn’t to switch from a heated debate to artificially positive sentiments toward each other. But when you can at least interject a positive sentiment here and there, back down from defensiveness, or call a timeout when de-escalation is needed, then your relationship will have a better chance of repairing and building trust over time.
