Nakhon Ratchasima, also known as Korat, is considered a gateway to the Northeastern region. Located 259 kilometers from Bangkok, it is the home of the heroic deeds of a Thai heroine, Khunying Mo, or Thao Suranari. It was also a major and important city in ancient times, serving as the capital of Chao Phraya Mahanakorn, similar to Nakhon Si Thammarat in the south. It ruled over many large and small towns in the Northeastern region. It was home to numerous ancient communities, from prehistoric to historical times.
