ArtChaeology - Exhibition by Shmuel Schelest
The exhibition "ArtChaeology" is about the connection between past and present.
It features three series of scrolls from the project "Commentaries" by Israeli painter Shmuel Schelest. It's dedicated to the Exodus of the Israelites from Egyptian slavery and wanderings
in the desert for over 40 years with Moses.
In this work, which has been going on for over ten years, Shmuel Schelest attempts
to give his personal visual commentary on the fundamental facts of Jewish history.
But he does so using language of modern art.
In this project, the artist works in monotype and mixed techniques.
According to Jewish tradition, “We all stood under Mount Sinai”, and in Schelest's archaic characters we recognize modern Israelis that we meet every day on the streets of Israel.
Shmuel Schelest was born in 1957 in Kyiv, Ukraine. In 2006 he repatriated to Israel. Nowadays, he lives and works in Jerusalem. He is well-known artist and he participated in 25 personal and numerous group exhibitions in Israel and all over the world.
