Welcome to Edición 808! In this tutorial, you will learn how to free up space in Final Cut Pro WITHOUT deleting important files. The first thing I recommend is storing your material on an external drive. Final Cut libraries, as we'll see later, take up a lot of space and can saturate your computer faster than you think. I work with two 1TB drives, as you can see on the screen, and that's more than enough for me.
Final Cut Pro gives you the option to save your libraries and your footage on an external hard drive or a second internal hard drive without any loss of efficiency.
In fact, your work tends to improve, since the external hard drive frees up computer resources, making everything run more smoothly. Just remember to take good care of your hard drive, as all your media and edits will be stored there!
If you're unsure which hard drive is best for you, we'll leave a link in the description with some good recommendations for external hard drives. Check them out; it might be the option you're looking for.
The process is simple: just create your library and choose the location on your external hard drive, as you can see on the screen.
But if your machine or hard drive is already full and you want to free up space, one way to save and recover space is simply to follow these steps:
We need to delete the rendering files.
Rendering files, optimized media, and proxy media can be regenerated by Final Cut at any time.
Therefore, it's not worth keeping them when we want to archive a library, since they will be regenerated when we reopen our library.
The best way to save and recover space is simply to follow these steps:
1) Select the library you want to clean in the file explorer.
2) Go to the File menu and choose Delete Generated Library Files.
3) Select the checkboxes:
Delete all rendering files, delete optimized media, and delete proxy media.
4) Click OK.
Even if you haven't created optimized or proxy media, it's fine to select this option. To verify the space freed up, simply select the library, in the inspector select the "i" tab, and as you can see, the size change is quite significant.
After cleaning up the library, simply close it by right-clicking and selecting "Close Library."
This step is important, as Final Cut will automatically start generating new render files, taking up space on your hard drive again.
