International Space Laws | What Laws are in Space?

Space law is the body of laws that govern things that have to do with space. Like general international law, space law is made up of a number of international agreements, treaties, conventions, and resolutions from the UN General Assembly, as well as the rules and regulations of international organizations.

Space law began in 1919, when international law recognized each country's right to control the airspace directly above its own territory. This right was later strengthened at the Chicago Convention in 1944. During the Cold War, countries started their own space programs. This pushed the International Council of Scientific Unions to create an official international space policy, called the International Geophysical Year.
International space law is made through the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. Five international agreements and five sets of rules about space activities have been made by the Committee.
These five treaties deal with things like preventing any one country from taking over space, limiting the use of weapons, letting people explore space freely, holding people responsible for damage caused by space objects, making sure spacecraft and astronauts are safe and can be rescued, preventing harmful interference with space activities and the environment, notifying and registering space activities, scientific research and the use of natural resources in space, and settling disputes in space.
Each of the treaties emphasizes the idea that space, the things that happen in space, and any benefits that might come from space should be used to improve the well-being of all countries and all people, with a focus on promoting international cooperation.
