Cano Cristales River - Why is Cano Cristales Called Rainbow River and Why it is So colorful. Look no further than Cano Cristales, the most colorful river in Colombia. Located in the remote Serrania de la Macarena National Park, Cano Cristales is a stunning river known for the wide array of natural colors in the water. The Liquid Rainbow is caused by a unique phenomenon: a red plant – Macarenia clavigera – growing in the riverbed. Other colors come from black rocks, green algae, blue water, and yellow sand, producing an iridescent effect. The river also features waterfalls, pools, and caverns, making it even more dramatic. The Caño Cristales river in La Macarena, Colombia is dubbed the "River of Five Colors" and "Liquid Rainbow" because of the many colors you can see below the clear waters. The 62.1 mile-long river is in Colombia's Serranía de la Macarena national park, in the province of Meta, and is known as the "River of Five Colors." This "liquid rainbow" -- as it is also called -- is one of the South American country's most spectacular natural wonders, thanks to its vivid colors.
