On the night of September 27, 2023, a Piper PA-28-161 Cherokee from Eagle Flight Academy launched into the return leg of a night cross-country with a convective SIGMET active along the route. The airplane never made it home.
A 5-month-rated flight instructor with 447 hours and a 37-hour student pilot were flying together for the first time, completing the night cross-country requirement before the student's private pilot checkride. The outbound leg was uneventful. The return leg crossed an active convective SIGMET warning of severe thunderstorms with tops to 42,000 feet, 1.25-inch hail, and 50-knot wind gusts.
The CFI had reviewed a weather briefing and was monitoring internet-sourced radar in the cockpit. What he likely didn't account for was the latency — a screen capture he posted to social media about 34 minutes before the accident showed radar imagery that was already roughly 10 minutes old. The flight pressed on, attempting to outrun the approaching line.
About five minutes before the accident, ATC advised of heavy-to-extreme precipitation at the airplane's nine o'clock. Two minutes later the CFI requested an IFR clearance and an easterly vector out of the weather. He told the controller the airplane was "getting blown around like crazy," then reported "pretty extreme turbulence." The flight track showed a descending right turn. No further transmissions came. The NTSB found the probable cause to be the flight instructor's improper decision to continue flight into a known area of thunderstorms, which resulted in an in-flight breakup.
The wreckage was scattered across 25 acres of hilly, wooded terrain. Postaccident examination found no evidence of any preimpact mechanical malfunction — the airframe was intact until the structural limits were exceeded in the turbulence. The pattern is the latency gap: a convective SIGMET on the briefing, datalink radar that looks current but isn't, and a decision to thread a line of cells using a picture of where the weather used to be.
