Fake Flight Instructor Gets Student Pilot Killed!

On a September morning in 2022, a Piper Cherokee lifted off a Pennsylvania runway on what was supposed to be a routine soft-field takeoff lesson — but the airplane mushed through ground effect, barely cleared the trees, and never climbed away.
The flight departed an airport near Allentown, Pennsylvania, with a student pilot in the left seat and a flight instructor in the right. The CFI had called for a soft-field takeoff. From the start, the Cherokee struggled to break ground, staggered through ground effect, and only just scraped over the trees off the departure end.
The instructor took the controls and immediately recognized the engine felt "noticeably weak." He pitched for best angle of climb and searched for somewhere to put the airplane down, but rising terrain and trees closed off his options. About eight-tenths of a mile beyond the runway, the Cherokee descended into the trees, broke up, and burned. The student pilot was killed. The instructor was pulled from the wreckage by a witness and survived with serious injuries.
Postaccident teardown of the airframe and engine revealed no preimpact anomalies, though fire damage prevented functional testing of several components. Recorded data showed the airplane was flying below published Vx but above stall speed — a deficit that could have shaved climb performance, though by how much could not be quantified. The recorded temperature and dewpoint were squarely in the range conducive to serious carburetor icing at glide power and at the edge of serious icing at cruise power. The NTSB determined the probable cause was a partial loss of engine power for undetermined reasons.
There is a second thread running underneath the engine question. The instructor's CFI privileges were not valid at the time of the flight — his commercial pilot certificate had been surrendered, which invalidated the flight instructor certificate built on top of it. A student pilot died on a lesson that, on paper, should never have been logged as instruction.
