Steps to Clean Up Duplicate Files
Launch and Select Folders — Open AllDupe and click on Select Folders. Use the browser tool to add specific directories, like your Documents or Pictures folder, or entire external drives you wish to compare.
Choose a Search Method — Navigate to the Search Method tab. You can find duplicates by:
File Name: Matches files with the exact same name.
File Extension: Useful if you only want to find duplicate JPGs or PDFs.
Content: This is the most accurate method, as it compares the actual data within the files to ensure they are identical even if their names are different.
Configure Filters — If you want to speed up the process, use the File Filters to exclude system files or focus only on large video files. You can also exclude subfolders that you know contain unique data.
Start the Search — Click Start Search. Once completed, AllDupe will group the duplicates. You can expand these groups to see the file paths and even use a preview pane to visually confirm that photos or text files are indeed duplicates.
Select Files for Removal — This is a manual process to ensure safety. Check the boxes for the files you want to get rid of. The software includes "Process Modes" to help you quickly select all but one file in each group.
Delete or Move — Click Process Selected Files. You have several options:
Delete: Move files to the Recycle Bin or perform a "Secure Delete."
Move/Copy: Move the duplicates to a specific "Backup" folder first so you can verify them before final deletion.
Review the Log — After the action is finished, a log will appear showing exactly how many files were removed and how much space was recovered.
