Forearm X-Ray Examination: A Comprehensive Guide
Purpose
A forearm X-ray is a diagnostic tool used to evaluate the bones of the forearm, including the radius and ulna. It helps in detecting fractures, dislocations, bone lesions, and other abnormalities.
Anatomy
The forearm consists of two long bones:
Radius: Located on the lateral (thumb) side of the forearm.

Patient Preparation

Positioning
1. AP (Anteroposterior) View:
Patient Position: The patient should sit beside the X-ray table with the affected arm fully extended and the palm facing upwards (supine).
Forearm Position: The forearm should be placed on the X-ray cassette, with the elbow extended and the wrist in a true AP position.
Central Ray (CR): Directed perpendicular to the midpoint of the forearm.
2. Lateral View:
Patient Position: The patient should sit beside the X-ray table with the affected arm flexed at 90 degrees at the elbow.
Forearm Position: The forearm should rest on the ulnar side with the thumb pointing upwards. The wrist and elbow should be in the same horizontal plane.
Central Ray (CR): Directed perpendicular to the midpoint of the forearm.

Radiographic Criteria
AP View:
Both radius and ulna should be visualized clearly from the elbow to the wrist.
No rotation, which is indicated by the radial head, neck, and tuberosity superimposed over the proximal ulna.
Lateral View:
The radius and ulna should be superimposed, showing the bones clearly without overlap.
The elbow and wrist joints should be visible.
Common Indications
Suspected fractures of the radius, ulna, or both.
Evaluation of dislocations.
Assessment of bone lesions or infections.
Monitoring the healing process post-fracture.
Precautions
Ensure proper shielding of the patient's reproductive organs and thyroid if needed.
Verify correct positioning to avoid repeat exposures.
Keep the patient still during exposure to avoid motion artifacts.
