Switching Silverton On The Durango & Silverton "Turning A 15 Car Train"
Follow along as I catch the switching exercise 9/7/22, from a different vantage point. This past summer the Durango & Silverton ran a lot of doublehead 15 car trains to Silverton, but the wye only holds 15 cars without an engine. Turning the train requires a slight modification to the Silverton switching operation. After pushing back to the Silverton depot, helper engine K36 #480 cuts loose from the train and runs around and turns on the wye. K36 #482 pushes the train into the tail of the wye and cuts loose and pulls forward. #480 backs to the train and finishes the turn and pushes back to pick up the passengers for the single engine train return to Durango. #482 runs light ahead of the train.
