Since 1994, Alexander Lukashenko has ruled Belarus, initially autocratically, and now through the harshest dictatorial violence. All forms of political opposition are suppressed, and freedom of the media and press are virtually nonexistent. Opposition members, democracy activists, and critics face imprisonment, torture, or forced exile. Since the nationwide uprisings against the rigged elections in 2020, nearly 1,500 political prisoners are currently incarcerated. The escalating global political situation is obscuring the world's view of these individuals' plight.

In this podcast episode, we discuss these political prisoners, their personal stories, and the significant contribution of political prisoner Maxim Znak, who documented his experiences in the book "Zekamerone," with author and publisher Katharina Raabe and Volker Weichsel from the magazine OSTEUROPA.
