Whether it’s considering the potential impacts of emerging technologies or designing trusted automated products, it’s critical that cyber security is informed by the people using that technology. We call this 'sociotechnology'. The vision for RISCS (the Research Institute for Sociotechnical Cyber Security) at the University of Bristol is to put people at the heart of cyber security challenges, to bring together academics, policy makers, and business leaders to work together to tackle cyber security issues collaboratively.

The University of Bristol has a global reputation for its highly innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to cyber security challenges. Bringing RISCS to Bristol means we can draw on this existing expertise plus our international partners, our close links with the technical industry and business, and our civic base in the local community to help find robust future solutions to cyber security challenges.

As Professor of Classics and Turing Fellow, Genevieve Liveley has been exploring the relationships between people and technology stretching back thousands of years. It's this deep understanding of technology from a human perspective that will help RISCS to explore new solutions to cyber security challenges in the twenty-first century.
