Léon Lambert: Romance sans paroles, Op.18
'Léon Lambert' is actually a pseudonym for the long-lived Norwegian organist and composer, Alfred Paulsen (1849-1936). He was a student of Grieg, and organist at a church in Oslo, until emigrating to the USA in 1888. He seems to have become a key member of the Norwegian émigré musical fraternity in Chicago. Paulsen had a famous brother, the ice-skater Axel Paulsen, after whom the skating figures 'Axel' and 'Double Axel' are named. I imagine that writing music under a French name with French titles must have been an irritation to his younger French contemporary Lucien-Leon Lambert (1858-1945), who also published salon piano music - but in France. This pleasant piece dates from 1882, and was published in Oslo. My thumbnail shows a vintage anniversary lapel for the Normennenes Singing Society of Chicago.
