Before absinthe became the rage of Europe, gin was the most popular flavored high octane booze on the market. Gin became almost non-existent until absinthe was outlawed and it found its place again in civilized barrooms. Hemingway invented the martini and James Bond had his shaken, not stirred, leaving gin as the bad penny of the alcoholic world. Gin is now poised to make a big comeback after being temporarily replaced by flavored vodkas and light beers.
I suggest drinking it straight with a dash of bitters.
