User Defined Server Roles in MS SQL Server
One of the longstanding drawbacks of SQL server security policies has been the inability to differentiate between administrator. While we have the capability of creating database roles and application roles we have never really had the ability to create server roles. As time has progressed the role of the DBA has increased and it has become critical to create teams of administrators who specialize in different tasks. These tasks have different roles and responsibilities and as a result have different requirements with regard to permissions. Server Roles inside SQL server allows us to create such roles with the bare minimum permissions required to achieve the task. This helps DBAs differentiate their skills in terms of L1, L2 or L3 and with each level have varying levels of permission. Thus ensuring mistakes do not happen and users are audited properly.
