Hey guys,
Who would have thought... 2 videos in year, didn't have that for quite a while now. :)
Remember that video that I posted more than 5 years ago? MiniMovie #1 - IJoshyMo? No? Well you should watch that, it's not bad either if I may say so myself. Anyways, today - 1877 days later - there's actually a second MiniMovie now, finally justifying the "#1" in the title of the first one.
This time I'm featuring kzlv, a well skilled Elite and Obstacle player who has been part of the community for quite a while now. He has been kind enough to provide me some replays, when I asked in discord... he's the only one who answered... thanks for nothing, guys, lol. :)
I wanted to do a new video for a long time now. I craved awesome looking laser shots, synched well with music and additionally some beautiful cameras... not saying that's what I achieved here, that's up to you to judge that.
Oh yeah, lasers... eh... MediaTracker is broken, right? Yes... but it is really?
... Yes it is, you still can't render lasers. Furthermore, when you resave a replay or just dare to think about using Ctrl+Z to undo something you did not want to do, Maniaplanet will completely forget about the existence of lasers ... then you have to reload the replay again... but you can't do saves, because that will break the replay too... I think you get what I'm trying to say here, it can be a real pain to work with MediaTracker nowadays.
There are ways to get around that, like saving cameras and other MediaTracks in Clips, then reload the replay and add the clip. But that's not the point, the point is, that MediaTracker work is tedious at times.
So now the question that all of you (actually, probably like 2% of you reading this) wanna ask me: How did I get Lasers in the video?
The answer is simple, somewhat brilliant, but most of all, completely stupid: Fog.
Fog; That MediaTrack that adds, well, fog to your replays. Set the color to the deepest black possible, the distance to 0, intensity to 100%, also for the sky and there you go: A Black screen... But how does that help again?
It turns out that some visual effects shine through the fog regardless. Precisely: Stars, some bullet explosions (but not the particles), players elimination desolves and - who would have thought - lasers! No rockets, no arrows, no nucleus... it's almost as it was intended (Probably not, lol).
So when you now create a normal rendered version of the replay and additionally record the black, foggy screen with a screen recording software of your choice, you can put both videos into the video editing software of your choice, put the black video on a layer above the rendered one and set the layer's mode to additive, so it adds the pixel color values of the black video to the corresponding color values of the rendered video, including the lasers.
All that's left is to sync the 2 videos up and there you go! You got Lasers in your video!
Sure, the lasers are not the best quality, since they are just recorded with a screen recording software, not rendered, but it's better than having no lasers.
Also you can do slowmos with that technique by using the "Timespeed"-MediaTrack and just recording everythign in slow motion.
So after all, the experience was much less painfull than I would have thought 2 months, when I didn't know about this yet. The editing process was pretty much the same as when MediaTracker wasn't broken, apart from the additional layer.
And I'm quite satisfied with how the video turned out, especially when you think about that I only worked like 2 Days on this. But at the same time I'm not satisfied with it, because I know, that I could do better. But at the current state of the MediaTracker and the game I just can't be bothered to put more effort into making videos.
What I like about making videos for Shootmania is having the ideas in your head, projecting them onto cameras, syncing all that stuff up with a good song and just get the basic feel of the video right. The video might not have the best image quality, but I'm fine with that, as long as I'm having fun while editing and as long as the result is a good looking, enjoyable video that I can be proud of. And I really hope you enjoyed it, too, because although I only worked on this for like 2 days, I actually spent a lot of hours on it during that time.
Anyways, thanks to kzlv to providing the replays, thanks to eFFecT for providing feedback during the process and thank all of you for watching.
Kindest regard,
Ze-Rax
