Shunkan is half-Japanese singer/songwriter, guitarist, and producer Marina Sakimoto born and raised in Southern California. As a response to feeling anxious about moving across the world to New Zealand, Shunkan is derived by the Japanese word for “in a moment”.
Inspired by the latter days of nineties grunge, shoegaze, second wave emo and early millennium pop rock, Shunkan weaves a captivating musical tapestry that serves as the perfect backdrop for Sakimoto's versatile musicianship. Unafraid to embrace darker themes, Sakimoto calls for inner exploration and contemplation, even at the mercy of herself. Her intense emotional honesty and kitschy observations make for a unique tonal balance in today’s musical landscape.
Shunkan's first EP Honey, Milk and Blood and debut album The Pink Noise were covered and highly reviewed by media publications The Guardian, NME, Noisey, Spin, Stereogum, BrooklynVegan, and others alike. NZ Musician Magazine selected Shunkan for the 2015 fall issue cover. In 2019, The National Library of New Zealand officially archived The Pink Noise, which was recorded and funded by the New Zealand government program NZ On Air. Sakimoto's independently released sophomore album "Cumberland Falls," received high praise and secured a coveted spot on NPR's Staff Picks of 2019. She has since released her EP “She Nods” in 2022 and is currently working on her third full-length album.
