A short video describing what to look for before driving out onto a lake with a truck/vehicle to try to ensure you stay safe.
I can only tell you what I personally look for before I head out onto any kind of ice. Please do your research, and if you come up empty, ask someone local who knows the ice conditions, i.e., your local fishing club or bait shop.

** River Ice is completely different from Lake Ice, most importantly in how it forms, it's structural integrity, factors that could change ice conditions in a short time - such as water level changes, temperature, and current.
-------------------------------------------------------
There are many pages online dictating acceptable ice thicknesses and how much weight ice can support. These are guidelines only and you should still physically check the ice yourself, and exercise extreme caution before driving on any ice, and keep to the beaten path. Lake ice is thickest where it's been plowed and maintained compared to snow covered ice.
