Deliberate Practice can unlock incredible potential - but first we need to eliminate the flaw that's holding us back.

I've seen the power of practice in multiple pursuits of my life - from my roots as a muscian, to my career as a filmmaker, and now in my passion as a climber. Climbing is a challenging physical pursuit, but it still adheres to the mechanisms of practice we see in other disciplines.

Practice in climbing is distinct from training. Whereas training improves our power on a boulder, or endurance on a route, practice is about acquiring the skills to make the most of the strength that we possess.

The key issue for many climbers - myself ABSOLUTELY included, is that we are often purely in performance mode. We want to give 100% to every climb, all of the time - and we rarely, if ever, take a step back to segue into skill acquisition.

However, if we start to allocate a small amount of time to deliberate practice, we'll find that our climbing steadily increases in quality and that our skillset expands in breadth. Though I'm still at the beginning of my climbing journey, I've seen the power of making this distinction and engaging in practice - and I hope this is an encouragement for you to keep doing the same!
