Referred to as the “Princess of Hills”, Kodaikanal is one of the most sought-after hill station destinations in Tamil Nadu and the whole of India. Located at about 7000 ft above the sea-level, Kodaikanal was established as a destination by British bureaucrats and Christian missionaries in the year of 1845. However the modern era of Kodaikanal began only after the British came in. It served as a summer retreat and a vacation spot for the colonial power. Ever since those days, Kodaikanal has been a popular choice among hill station lovers for a quick escape up the mountains.
Plenty of activities await a visitor here. Boating, cycling, horse riding and trekking are some of the most common among them. One of the other spectacles of this region is the Kurinji flower that blooms only once in 12 years, making itself a unique spectacle to watch.
Guna Cave
It was initially named as The Devil's Kitchen, is a cave located in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, India. It attracts many visitors every year.
The location got the name Guna Caves after it was featured in the 1991 film Gunaa starring Kamal Haasan. Since the release of the film, the location has attracted a large number of visitors and tourists.
The caves are notorious for its dangerous history as many people who entered to explore them have disappeared without a trace.
As of 2016, police have recorded 16 disappearances in connection with the cave without bodies being retrieved. To date, only one person has ever escaped from the depths of the Guna caves, which serves as the central narrative for the 2024 Malayalam film Manjummel Boys.
Kodaikanal Lake
This lake is not a natural formed but artificial lake with star-shaped built in 1850's at the time of British rule with a depth of around 10 feet. You will find plenty of boats
Bryant Park
In 1908 H. D. Bryant, a forest officer from Madhurai, set up a small park near Kodai Lake.The park, named after him, has now developed into a botanical garden spanning over 20 acres. Kodaikanal Bryant Park is compared with New York's Bryant Park, America.
Home to a wide variety of plants, cactus, and trees that were planted 100 years ago. Bryant Park is an ideal destination to spend time with your loved ones amidst a serene landscape adorned with the colours and fragrance of countless flowers carefully arranged and maintained.
The park is also home to a eucalyptus tree that is almost 175 years old. The annual flower show, conducted in the month of May
Coaker's Walk
Open from 7 AM to 7 PM, the walkway is very near to Kodaikanal Lake and next to Bryant Park. Constructed in 1872 by Lieutenant Coaker on the mountain slope. Tourists come here to enjoy the sunrise and the sunset.
It is better to visit the place before 2.30 pm for a clear view before the mist sets in. Entry fee is Rs 10 per person and Rs 20 for the telescope observatory. If the day is clear, tourists can see the Dolphin's nose point in the south and also Madurai city from the viewpoint.
If luck favours, you can see your shadow on the clouds with a rainbow halo. Since the road is steep, it is best to wear sports shoes, rather than slippers or heels, for a comfortable walking experience. You can carry water with you to keep yourself hydrated.
Moir Point
The place is named after Sir Thomas Moir. There is a monument which mentions this and stands on the road joining the Kodaikanal-Berijam Lake.
Since this place offers amazing views of the valleys, it remains one of the most crowded places in Kodaikanal. As for the nature lovers, sitting beside the nearby Berijam Lake witnessing the sunset view makes up for something. This place is worth spending time at.
Pine Forest
These plantations were put up a century ago. Perfect spot to listen the whispers of Nature
It is said that the British Forest Officer H.D.Bryant planned and planted the pine trees across Kodaikanal. You will see plenty of monkeys, squirrels, and birds. Kodai Kanal means Gift Forest and Pine Forest is famous for Photography and Nature walks. Enjoy a horse ride along the trail among these tall, pine trees.
