In 1964 there was an awards ceremony that brought together The Beatles and stuffy British government officials (including Prime Minister Harold Wilson) for an afternoon luncheon. Mr. Wilson was famously memorialized two years later in George Harrison's "Taxman".
“Purple Hearts” was British slang for amphetamines (speed). The Beatles took handfuls to stay awake during all night gigs in Hamburg (and continued all throughout their time together). Their faithful roady Mal Evans would always have a supply on hand for whenever the boys needed a "boost".
