Have you ever wondered if a coin dropped from a skyscraper could fracture your skull? In this video, we investigate the science behind this question.
Imagine a 2-gram coin being dropped on you from a height of 1 kilometer. Due to air resistance, it falls with a terminal velocity of around 80 km/hr. When it hits a skull at this speed, it can transfer a maximum of 0.5 joules of energy.
However, from research, it's found that the minimum energy required to fracture your skull is 14 joules. So, the coin didn't cause much harm to you, but it's still important to be careful when you're near tall buildings!
