Python is one of the widely used programming languages in the financial world due to easy to use data analysis tools and use of simple syntax which looks like written in English.
This Python for Trading course is comprehensively designed to learn, research, backtest, and live trade your strategies. It allows you to develop and improve your Python skills through interactive coding exercises. There are no prerequisites to this course. You will start with a single line of code and build over it step by step to create a fully functional strategy.
The course will start with the basics of Python concepts such as functions, loops, and common data structure supported by it to give a kick start into this fascinating world of algorithmic trading. Then, you will learn about some handy and powerful libraries provided by Python for data analysis and are specific to trading.
Using these libraries, you will be able to import or export financial data, transform data to make it suitable for your purpose, and customise charts for better visualisation. The best way to learn anything is by doing.
The second part of this course deals with the real application of the Python language in trading. This will start with the preprocessing of the raw financial data like data cleaning and data resampling.
Why is it important to preprocess the data? The unprocessed data might lead to spurious results. For example, an unusual jump in the close price as seen on screen seems incorrect. If you backtest a trading strategy on this data, then it will give you false and often misleading results.
Then, you will learn to develop and backtest a trading strategy based on the technical indicators.
As you know, trading in real-world is not free, and there are commissions and transaction costs which you have to pay. At the same time, the price at which your order gets executed might be different than the last traded price. You will learn in detail to incorporate commissions and slippages in your strategy.
You backtested the strategy, and returns are outstanding. Should you consider this strategy for live trading? Probably not. As you can see, these are different return time series, but the one in green is the best. Looking only at the returns are not always a good idea.
You can also look at other measures such as Sharpe ratio, volatility, and drawdown, to determine if the strategy is worth your money.
If the performance measure looks good then with a single click, you can paper or live trade your strategy. It doesn’t require any download or installation in your local system to live trade. Yes, everything can be done in the Quantra platform itself.
In case of any doubts, feel free to post your queries on the Quantra community and answer other queries as well. All the codes and data files used in the course can be downloaded.
After completing the course, you get an opportunity to earn certification by MCX and QuantInsti and build a solid foundation in Python to unleash the power of algorithmic trading. You can go for higher level courses focused on other strategy paradigms and also trade in live markets using your trading algorithms.
