When I was just a little boy, about the age of three
I climbed to the top of a big oak tree to see what I could see
The people looked like puppy dogs and the puppy dogs looked like bees
I took the best look I could look and said, "This is where I wanna be"

I went to tell my mama all about my overview
She said, "Son, someday you're gonna fall and break your neck and that'll be the end of you"
I said, "Don't worry, Mama. I know what I have to do
I'm gonna climb them trees for the rest of my life. I really dig the altitude."

I built myself a tree house in hickory tree about the time I was barely five
None of my friends would dare to come up, though some of them gave it a try
I watched them play their run-around games, and let me tell you, it was quite a sight
They looked like ants on a peanut-butter sandwich. I said, "I'm so glad I can be high."

I could not wait for recess when they finally sent me off to school
I would climb to the top of a big old elm tree and watch until recess was through
The teacher said, "If you don't learn how to play, you're gonna grow up to be a fool."
I said, "I play your games in the classroom, but when I get out here I gotta skip all of your rules."

I don't like to play no baseball game, because they only got three bases
I don't like to read no history book and stare at all them ugly faces
And I don't care what the purpose of memorizing all them dates is
Just give me a tree that's high enough, I'll tell you all about all of those places

I feel so free up in my tree
I see you, but you can't see me
And if you try to chop down my tree
I'll throw nuts on your head
