During the height of World War II in the cold waters of the North Atlantic one of the most feared predators of the sea was on the prowl the German U boat U 32 commanded by Hans Jenisch From within its steel hull Jenisch spotted the RMS Empress of Britain a massive Canadian ocean liner turned troop carrier heavily damaged by Luftwaffe bombing and being towed to safety by Allied tugs With flames rising from her decks the ship was a tempting prize and Jenisch prepared his submarine for the kill Stealthily maneuvering through the waves he launched three deadly torpedoes that tore through the Empress of Britain Within ten minutes the giant vessel rolled over and slipped beneath the icy surface becoming the largest ship ever sunk by a submarine It was the crowning achievement of Jenisch’s wartime career but his triumph would not last long
Hans Jenisch was no ordinary commander Born in 1913 he began his career aboard the cruiser Deutschland where he honed his naval skills and discipline Although trained on surface ships his destiny led him into the deadly world of U boats In 1937 he joined U 32 one of the earliest German Type VII submarines later classified as Type VIIA The submarine displaced 616 tons surfaced and 733 submerged carried eleven torpedoes and was powered by supercharged Germaniawerft diesel engines giving it a formidable presence at sea By the outbreak of war in 1939 Jenisch was second in command under Captain Werner Lott but by February 1940 he took command of U 32 himself From that moment he embarked on a deadly campaign against Allied shipping sinking merchant vessels warships and trawlers across the Atlantic
On his first patrol as commander in March 1940 Jenisch sank the Swedish ship Lagaholm and quickly followed with more victories By June he had destroyed the American destroyer USS Altair and two Spanish trawlers and within a single day sank two more vessels His successes mounted with each patrol culminating in the attack on the British cruiser HMS Fiji in August 1940 which forced the warship to withdraw from Operation Menace for repairs By the time U boats were recognized as the greatest naval threat in the Atlantic Jenisch had already become a name whispered in fear among Allied sailors His bold tactics and relentless pursuit of enemy ships made him one of the most feared submarine commanders of the war
The sinking of the Empress of Britain in October 1940 became Jenisch’s most famous victory The ship had already survived heavy bombing raids by German aircraft but Jenisch and his crew ensured her fate with their torpedo attack The loss of such a massive vessel stunned the Allies and cemented U 32’s place in naval history Yet only three days later fate turned against Jenisch While pursuing what seemed to be a lone steamer U 32 was ambushed by British destroyers Harvester and Highlander Equipped with the latest anti submarine technology they hammered U 32 with depth charges that crippled the submarine forcing her to surface In desperation Jenisch attempted to fight back with a torpedo but missed and the destroyers opened fire With flooding uncontrollable and systems failing Jenisch ordered the crew to abandon ship U 32 rose one final time before sinking into the depths of the Atlantic forever
Jenisch and several of his crew including Chief Engineer Anton Thimm were rescued by the very destroyers that had sunk their boat They were taken as prisoners of war but were treated with respect during captivity Jenisch spent six and a half years in British prison camps where he forged friendships with other captured U boat commanders including Wilfried Prellberg Despite his reputation as a deadly U boat ace Jenisch later dismissed the role of submarines in warfare calling them obsolete After the war he returned to Germany and in 1956 joined the Bundesmarine of West Germany where he served in various roles eventually becoming Divisional Training Commander and retiring in 1972 with the rank of Kapitän zur See
Over the course of his career Hans Jenisch completed seven war patrols sinking seventeen ships and damaging three more amounting to more than 110000 gross register tons His record earned him recognition as a U boat ace and made U 32 one of the most feared submarines of the Atlantic Though his victories brought terror to the Allies
