Here are the symptoms:
Needle stuck at zero or a specific speed: A clear sign of a damaged speedometer is when the speedometer needle remains at zero or a particular speed despite the vehicle accelerating or decelerating.
Inconsistent and erratic speedometer reading: Another sign of a malfunctioning speedometer is inconsistent reading, from 40mph to 80mph, without any change in speed. Additionally, when the needle bounces around from one speed reading to another, it indicates that the speedometer is not reading.
Illumination of check engine light: A faulty speedometer head, faulty speed sensor, or damaged speedometer connecting cables may prompt the display of check engine light.
Transmission problems: Rough or delayed shifts may be attributed to a faulty speedometer.
Here’s what causes it and how to resolve the issue:
Damaged speed sensor
The speed sensor measures the car’s speed and relays this information to the speedometer. When the speed sensor is faulty or damaged, it will lead to inaccurate or no readings on the speedometer. Similarly, a defective speed sensor may trigger a check engine or gauge light. Fixing this issue requires reading the displayed error codes using an OBD-II scanner to diagnose the situation correctly. Similarly, a faulty speedometer must be replaced immediately to avoid additional potential problems with ABS, cruise control, and traction control.
Blown fuse and wiring issues
The speedometer instrument cluster or circuits are fitted with fuses that may be blown, causing a malfunctioning speedometer. To fix this issue, you first need to locate the fuse box, which is typically located in the engine bay or dashboard. If you fail to find it, consult the manual. Use the drawing on the fuse box cover to locate the speedometer fuse and replace it to restore functionality.
Damaged speedometer cables and wiring
Another cause of a faulty speedometer is damage to the connecting wires or speedometer cables. These cables or wires may wear out over time or get disconnected. In other cases, mechanical damage, rust, or corrosion may contribute to damage. Damaged speedometer cables may fail to send data to the speedo unit, hence a malfunction. Wiring issues will make the speedometer work intermittently or possibly cause flickering speedometer lights.
Fixing this issue requires you to access the speedometer cables and wiring for any signs of damage and replace them immediately. Some wires may be beyond reach; therefore, seek the professional help of a mechanic.
