In 1845, Frédéric Lacroix's pamphlet "Secrets of Russia: A Political and Moral Picture of the Russian Empire" was published in France.
According to the author himself, he conducted a comprehensive analysis of Russian society and its power structures and concluded that Russia embodied the ideal of absolute despotic power. What characterizes such power? I quote: "Disregard for individual freedom, lack of interest in people's lives, brutal violation of all the most sacred rights of social life, the treacherous use of force and the abuse of power itself." Lacroix himself never visited Russia, unlike the famous de Custine, but he boasted that he understood the country's secrets far more deeply than the caustic marquis.
This is just one of the gems of anti-Russian propaganda in 19th-century France. Today, we'll explore a whole panorama of such works. Our guides and experts will be Natalia Tanshina and Andrey Mitrofanov.
