Zygmunt Noskowski (2 May 1846 – 23 July 1909) was a Polish composer, conductor and teacher.

The opera is a comedy about the rivalry between two noblemen: Raptusiewicz and Milczek, who each live in one half of a castle divided by a wall, erected at the suggestion of Papkin. Raptusiewicz wants to marry Podstolina for her money,
while Podstolina herself seeks a wealthy match. Regent Milczek's wish, on the other hand, is for his son Vaclav to marry Podstolina, but Vaclav is in love with Klara, ward and niece of Raptusiewicz, and she loves him. When Papkin's
too declares his love for Klara, things get complicated....
