Students, faculty use harm reduction to destigmatize drug use
At Ohio State, students and researchers are helping the community through harm reduction strategies that meet people who use drugs where they are — decreasing the risk of death through strategies including education about the overdose-reversal drug naloxone.
Public Health students Dana Oehme and Laura Powers are members of the group Buckeyes for Harm Reduction and share how the organization is educating the Buckeye community about the opioid epidemic and how they can help prevent overdoses and save lives.
And the work of Assistant Professor Ayaz Hyder, who also is advisor to Buckeyes for Harm Reduction, is showing Ohio’s local health departments where treatment recovery deserts exist (https://cph.osu.edu/news/2021/05/%E2%...) to help them identify where best to situate new facilities and better serve their communities. His research team is also developing a secure data network so departments and their partners can create impactful opioid policies and planning initiatives.
