Solving math story problems can be challenging! Engage students with this Thanksgiving themed interactive Google slides activity to help them explore and make sense of math word problems. Students will solve multiplication & division word problems using moveable modeling pieces to show their mathematical thinking.
In this interactive lesson, students will be solving one-step multiplication & division story problems. There are 4 additional multi-step challenge problems for early finishers. Aligned to 3rd grade standard below, but also beneficial to 4th grade students who need additional practice with solving multiplication and division word problems.
Common core aligned to CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.3 Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Many students in my class always dreaded story problems, they struggled to read the problem carefully and determine which operation to use. I created this tool to make word problems fun, and to help students model story problems in a variety of ways with easy to use moveable pieces to help visualize and make sense of problems.
This activity can be used for math centers, intervention, independent learning, distant learning, small group lessons, or even whole group lessons.
Worksheets with the story problems are included in the resource. Print them out, project the slides on the board and use them to work together with your class to model the problems.
To save time and help gather formative data on student performance, the resource includes a self-grading Google form and record sheet. When completing the interactive Google slide, students record their answer in the box on their record sheet. Next, they input their answers into the Google form and submit for instant feedback. This will immediately provide you with valuable data on next steps for teaching or reteaching this skill.
In addition, a Google Slides answer key is included and shows a modeling example for every problem.
