In this lecture, I deconstruct the process of making a diagnosis using laboratory evidence. The process of developing a testing strategy to rule out differential diagnoses will be described. An in-depth discussion of sampling considerations will then be presented followed by a high-level description of definitions important when discussing antimicrobial resistance. Finally, the importance of considering sensitivity, specificity, positive/negative predictive values when interpreting test data will be briefly highlighted.
