Alexander's empire ended with his death, but his dream of uniting East and West was realized in culture. From the union of Greek and Eastern civilizations, Hellenistic civilization was born, which brought profound changes to politics, culture, and science.
The common Greek language allowed Greek art and knowledge to spread from the Mediterranean to India. The Greeks, in turn, encountered previously unknown cultures and adopted Eastern elements, such as the cult of the Egyptian goddess Isis.
City-states no longer existed, but the political organization was that of monarchy. Kings were generally interested in culture, inviting artists and philosophers to their courts and commissioning grandiose monuments.
The sciences saw great advances. Archimedes advanced mathematics and physics and made important technological inventions. Aristarchus was the first to argue that the Earth revolves around the Sun.
