T Coronae Borealis (T CrB), also known as the Blaze Star, last exploded in 1946, and it does so at roughly 80 year intervals. Astronomers believe it will do so again between February and September 2024.
The star, T Coronae Borealis, is actually composed of two stars: a red giant and a white dwarf. The white dwarf is a dense stellar core about the size of the Earth and its gravity is pulling gas off the red giant. This gas accumulates on the white dwarf’s surface before detonating in a thermonuclear explosion, causing the star to temporarily brighten. Eventually, it returns to normal and the cycle repeats.
It was first discovered in outburst in 1866 by John Birmingham, although it had been observed earlier as a 10th magnitude star. It may have been observed in 1217 and in 1787 as well.
Located in the Northern Crown constellation, T Coronae Borealis (T CrB) is a pretty average looking star, most of the time. With a brightness of about magnitude +10, it's right on the limits of what you could see with a pair of binoculars, and even if you do go looking there's not much to see.
T Coronae Borealis is 3,000 light-years away from Earth, is just a little too dim and far to be observed by the “unaided eye” (without a powerful telescope). it's predicted to become visible to the unaided eye soon. This could be a once-in-a-lifetime viewing opportunity.
