so when you fall in the void, the game does not drop your axes. Therefore, you keep them after respawning. But when you reload during the 5 second death-timer, the game saves your axe, but it still remains in the inventory because the game didn't drop the axe. When you reload, the game gives you the axe that was saved when you die. (if you know what I mean lol, I'm bad at explaining)
don't hold the axe when you die lol.
