② Goryeo-era Sarira Returns Home
President Yoon Suk Yeol embarked on a trip to three Central Asian nations for talks on the launch of a summit involving the leaders of South Korea and five Central Asian countries as well as a new initiative called the “K-Silk Road.” The Roundtable discusses the strategic and economic importance of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan and their relations with South Korea. It also proposes directions for achieving sustainable cooperation in the future.
A collection of Goryeo-era sarira has returned home recently, a century after it was illegally taken out of Korea during the Japanese colonial era. Afterwards, the Korean Buddhist relic was acquired and possessed by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In February this year, the U.S. museum agreed to return the sarira to Korea in the form of donation. The Roundtable deals with the meanings of bringing illegally exported cultural objects back home.
