Body and Mind Wellness
Although many people don't realize it, the mind and body are powerful allies. Both influence each other's well-being in astonishing ways. For example, a broken wrist can be easy to diagnose and treat; but some medical conditions are not well-defined. These, in most cases, are related to a deep connection between the body and mind.
Hundreds of studies have shown that the body and mind interact in ways that can affect a person's health.
One case worth mentioning is that of the digestive system, which is profoundly controlled by the mind. Anxiety, depression, and the environment significantly affect the functioning of this system.
On the other hand, social and psychological stress can also trigger or aggravate a wide variety of diseases and disorders, such as diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, and migraines.
How do thoughts and feelings affect health?
The brain produces substances that can improve health. These include endorphins, which are natural painkillers, and gamma globulin, whose main benefit is strengthening the immune system.
Research conducted in recent years shows that what the brain produces depends largely on thoughts, feelings, and expectations. If a person is sick but has a positive attitude, the brain will likely produce the chemicals necessary to cure the condition.
Negative thoughts and emotions can prevent the brain from producing certain chemicals that help the body heal.
How does stress affect the body?
Stress—caused by work, routine problems, etc.—generates a biological response in the body known as the “fight or flight” response. When a person faces a threat (fight) or avoids it (flight), there is a complex combination of physical, emotional, and mental reactions.
When you are stressed or anxious, the body reacts as if facing an attack, releasing hormones that accelerate the heart rate and breathing; it also increases blood pressure and tenses the muscles.
This reaction is ideal when trying to avoid an accident or some other type of danger.
However, if a person feels constantly stressed, the body's response will be to fight or flee for a prolonged period, and this will keep blood pressure high. This, of course, is bad for the heart.
Stress, for its part, can also affect emotions. With mood swings, a person may feel tense, upset, or depressed.
Is it possible to develop a positive connection between the body and the environment? mind?
A person can do certain things to improve the connection between the body and mind, which will improve their health. For example, by reducing stress, many negative effects it has on the body can be counteracted.
There are exercises that help improve the mind-body connection, such as yoga, which helps control anxiety and pain.
There are many activities that, with mindfulness, help renew energy and improve mood.
The interaction between the body and mind is, as many physiatrists say, a two-way street. Not only do psychological factors contribute to the onset or worsening of various physical disorders, but also organic diseases can affect the way we think and mood.
Depression, for example, is very common in people with life-threatening, recurring, or chronic illnesses.
