One cheap component stops my "Home Alone" device

Just fix it, right? Well, it was 800 miles away in a different country. Dang!

This unit (there are two) monitors movement in my mum's apartment so we know she's OK. Lack of movement over a period of time (90 minutes) sends us an email. All activity is uploaded to Thingspeak so we can see the results on a phone at any time.

The project used the Wemos D1 Mini ESP8266 stackable modules. These are small, uniformly-sized modules that just push-fit together to make connections very easy indeed.
