Previous videos discussed why 18th-century Qing Dynasty maps only depicted the western half of Taiwan's plains. The main reason was the Qing government's limited resources; ruling the area east of the Central Mountain Range was simply too expensive. However, another important consideration was preventing Han Chinese colonists from expanding on the island. If you look at 18th-century Qing Dynasty maps of Taiwan, you'll quickly find many maps called "aboriginal boundary maps." These boundaries were drawn on the blank edges of the maps, distinguishing between areas actually controlled by the empire and those not. There weren't just one version of these boundaries; some had red lines, some blue lines, some purple lines, and some green lines. These boundaries constantly changed throughout the 18th century, and they were also known as "local aboriginal boundaries." In this episode, we'll examine the historical background of these boundaries, especially the proactive reforms of the Yongzheng Emperor's policy of sealing off Taiwan in the 1720s, and how these reforms triggered the largest rebellion of the "civilized aboriginals" in Taiwan at the time. This rebellion spanned present-day Changhua, Taichung, Miaoli, and Nantou, and was quite large. Why did the "civilized aboriginals" rebel? In this video, we'll explore these questions together.
