Curtiss P-40 Warhawk - Outdated or Underrated WWII Fighter?
The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk is an American single-engined, single-seat, all-metal fighter and ground-attack aircraft that first flew in 1938. The P-40 design was a modification of the previous Curtiss P-36 Hawk which reduced development time and enabled a rapid entry into production and operational service.
First flown in April 1941, the P-40C was considered the first truly combat-ready version of the P-40 line. A price had been paid for the necessary improvements, however. The aircraft’s gross weight had increased from 7,215 to 8,058 pounds, an increase of 843 pounds or approximately 11 percent, with no increase in engine power. The P-40C’s rate of climb suffered, it was less maneuverable, and its maximum speed fell to 340 miles per hour.
The P-40 was used by over two dozen countries during and after the War. The P-40 was used by Brazil, Egypt, Finland, and Turkey. The last P-40s in military service, used by the Brazilian Air Force, were retired in 1954.
