The History of Chicken Soup as a Remedy
Chicken soup is no modern miracle cure. It was already used as a remedy for colds in ancient Egypt. Even today, it is widely used in many cultures to relieve the symptoms of a cold. But what's behind it?

Research shows that chicken soup may indeed have anti-inflammatory properties. One study found that it blocks certain white blood cells called neutrophils. These play a central role in inflammatory processes and are released in greater quantities during colds. The effect: This could reduce swelling of the mucous membranes. However, this study was an in vitro study, meaning research results from a test tube cannot be directly transferred to the human body. Nevertheless, there is evidence that chicken soup can have positive effects.

The Power of Nutrients in Chicken Soup
Chicken soup contains numerous nutrients that can strengthen the immune system. The chicken, in particular, provides plenty of protein. These proteins are essential for the function of our immune cells and contribute to cell repair. The meat also contains cysteine, an amino acid that has anti-inflammatory properties and helps reduce swelling of mucous membranes.

Other ingredients such as vegetables (carrots, onions, celery) also provide important vitamins and minerals. Potassium and sodium, in particular, which are important for electrolyte balance, help the body replenish lost electrolytes – for example, due to fever and fluid loss.

Fluid intake – the underrated helper
One of the most important reasons why chicken soup can be helpful for colds is hydration. Especially during infections, the mucous membranes dry out, which aggravates symptoms such as sore throat and hoarseness. Warm liquids, such as those found in soup, moisten the mucous membranes, soothe irritation, and improve circulation, which helps the immune system function.
