Many myths surround mental health that lead to easy misconceptions . One myth is that self-harm is a form of attention seeking behavior. However, self-harm is actually a coping mechanism and people who self-harm try to hide their scars and injuries.
Another myth is that eating disorders only affect females. (In fact, 25% of cases are male.) You also don’t need to have a mental health diagnosis in order to seek therapy; but, anyone can develop anxiety or depression due to lifestyle or behaviors.
Moreover, PTSD is not only seen in army veterans: anyone who has gone through a major traumatic event such as being involved in a car crash or harassed and bullied can develop the disorder.
Finally, asking someone if they're suicidal will not encourage their suicide attempt. Instead, it may help them feel comfortable enough with you to check alternatives and seek help.
