The Foundation assigns each object a special class (from "Safe" to "Keter" or "Thaumiel") and an SCP-type identification number (since the 1000s, SCP-). SCP objects (in some contexts, simply referred to as "SCPs" or "objects") can be various paranormal phenomena—from individual creatures (e.g., SCP-058) to entire locations (SCP-354)—as well as ordinary people, objects, and animals that nonetheless exhibit anomalous properties.
Each document describing an SCP object, after stating the object's security class, describes the containment procedures required for that specific object. This section of the document is mandatory and is titled "Special Containment Procedures." In addition to containment and study, the Foundation aims to protect humanity from these objects. The Foundation's goals are reflected in its motto: "Secure. Contain. Protect."
Although the Foundation's goal is to protect humanity, its policy includes cruel and inhumane treatment of individuals when it is for the benefit of humanity. Therefore, SCP testing procedures allow for the use of humans in dangerous, or even lethal, tests. Containment recontainment procedures for some objects involve human sacrifice (e.g., Retrieval Protocol RP-106-N). In cases of serious containment breaches, the use of nuclear weapons against objects is permitted, which also entails human casualties.
