Dr. Jonathan Gielgud was created for "Everything You Wanted to Know About WJMU (But Were Afraid to Ask)", an hour-long special produced for WJMU's 47th anniversary. Portrayed by Antonio Verdera, the character soon began making appearances on "Owl Stretching Time".
