Georg Schmitt - a famous composer from Trier
On March 1, 1835, Georg Schmitt was appointed cathedral organist in Trier at the age of just 14. He had previously received his musical training on organ and piano from Joseph Antony in Münster from 1833 to 1835. He then became titular organist at the most famous organ of the time in Paris, France, at the Church of St. Sulpice for 14 years (1849 to 1863).
Schmitt became extremely well-known in his homeland, especially for the Moselle Song he composed. But what made him special? Where does his work still have an impact today?
