"I have had the opportunity to photograph very different people. Over the course of nearly 30 years in my career, individuals from various professions and social backgrounds, men, women, and children have stood before the lens of my camera. Each of them left a mark on my life, but there were certain shoots that left an indelible impression. Undoubtedly, Rico's shoot was one of them. We worked in complete silence, not uttering a word. I captured him in absolute stillness, and neither of us spoke; typically, music plays during a shoot to set the mood, but not this time. Silence resonated, and in that quietude, I felt as though I could hear his heart beating. We existed within the same space, where he allowed me to observe him. It reminded me of another scene in my life when I found myself alone one early morning at the zoo, in front of a cheetah enclosure. The cheetah was aware of my presence and granted me the opportunity to watch it. A magnificent creature confined in a cage, it saw me but lived its own life.
Similarly, I felt that Rico was confined within the mask he wore throughout his life.
