Montessori First movable alphabet writing lesson
Once the children can use the alphabet box and take letters in and out of the box successfully, we can actually start writing!
We want to encourage them to write about what matters to them. For example: What did you do this weekend?
They might say: We went swimming at the lake.
1. Slowly articulate each sound in the word (we went swimming at the lake). Sound out the first word again and isolate the “w” sound.
2. Look at the letters slowly (so slowly that the child might find it first; Julia had to go quickly in this video but you should go slowly with children), discover the w, and place it on the work rug, just below the alphabet box.
3. Continue until the whole word is written. Be careful to proceed slowly enough so that the child is able to step in but quickly enough to maintain attention (don't go as quickly as Julia goes in this video; it's for you guys, not children). When looking for the “ee” sound, help the child find it in the phonogram alphabet box. You must model phonetic spelling (/w/ee/w/e/n/t) at this stage (spelling will refine naturally with reading experience).
If the child knows the accurate spelling, they will use it.
4. Say, “Oh, I liked doing that. Let’s write more of your story,... swimming at the lake.” Pause to give the child a chance to choose the word to write next. If not, you
can suggest one. “Let’s write swimming. This time you can do it!” Help the child if she needs it. Slowly do less and less until the child can step in and take over.
5. Continue to inspire the child to write as many words from this or another story as they would like but be sure to stop before fatigue sets in. You want to leave them loving this work and wanting more.
When you’re done, celebrate the accomplishment, “Look at the story we’ve written!” Don't ask them to read it back! Remember, writing comes before reading.
