🎁To discover 3 great free exercises to master your voice and breath: https://mailchi.mp/9c06d3ed23a8/exerc...
A two-part exercise, I'll show you with my student Thib M.
Do you want to unlock the full potential of your voice? Then you have to start with the basics!
I don't know if you've ever practiced breathing exercises alone, and you're right to do so! You manage your breath well, but once you start singing, you can't because you don't know how to coordinate breathing and singing. This exercise is the "connection" you need.
One of my students, Sylvain, told me during the fourth or fifth session that the work we were doing together might seem a little strange at first because, unlike previous sessions with another vocal coach, we weren't singing from beginning to end. I wasn't expecting that, and yet I realized that I was singing more easily, that I had progressed, and that I was developing new reflexes. Then he remembered a quote from the martial arts master and actor Bruce Lee, which he shared with me: "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 blows once, but I fear the man who has practiced one blow 10,000 times."
Now that you're familiar with the text, we'll move on to repeating the same quotes, but each time taking only one breath at the beginning. Yes, it's the opposite of what we did earlier. Now you need to slow down the rise of your diaphragm; your stomach shouldn't contract too quickly, and your sides should remain open throughout the exhalation.
Be careful of micro-breaths, those we take without even realizing it. That's why I intentionally removed the punctuation.
You'll get used to engaging your expiratory muscles, to diaphragmatic and costal breathing, while controlling your vocal volume to integrate this breath control technique so you can easily apply it to your songs. To be honest, it's accessible to everyone, but it won't happen by itself! Initially, in your vocal exercises and songs, you'll need to pay attention to your breathing and posture. It can take anywhere from two weeks to two months to fully integrate it so you can sing freely without thinking about it. I really want to emphasize this, especially at the beginning, because it complements other breathing exercises. This one adds the spoken voice, with the vocal folds coming together—an important step before singing. Often, breathing is reversed, and if you sing, many parameters already come into play: pitch, rhythm, nuances… it's normal that it's difficult to synchronize everything. With this exercise, you'll develop automatic breathing and posture. If you do it hunched over, you won't get the same result as if you do it with an open posture! Do it in front of a mirror or film yourself to start; it helps.
I've chosen inspiring, motivating quotes to read neutrally, without interpretation, focusing on managing your breath and the sound of your voice. As long as you're not comfortable with breath control, repeat this exercise. You can slow down your pace to adapt it to your progress. I'm curious to know which part you find easier and which is more challenging—part 1 or part 2? Feel free to let me know in the comments! If you practice with my exercises, don't hesitate to tag me on your social media! Give this video a like if you found it helpful; it really encourages me! I wish you a great practice session on Wednesday for the #Laclédelavoix podcast and most likely on Friday at 4 PM for a new video. See you soon! 🎥 AMBRE LAMSON
