IOTA protocol is an open-source distributed ledger technology that was built based on the idea of the Internet of Things (IoT). It allows the transfer of data and IOTA tokens between connected devices at no cost, with one-time signatures to stop attackers from stealing IOTA tokens.
Tangle is an unchangeable data structure that contains all the latest transaction history. All nodes in the IOTA network store a copy of Tangle and agree on its contents. All transactions in Tangle are immutable and transparent. If someone changes the contents of any transaction, the hash will be invalidated, rendering the transaction invalid.
The IOTA protocol aims to overcome an issue that it considers inherently problematic in the crypto space: scalability. For each transaction connected to Tangle, the first two transactions will be verified. This process makes IOTA incredibly scalable, as more new transactions lead to faster validation.
Cryptocurrency exchanges sell IOTA tokens in units of Mega IOTA, which is also written as MIOTA or Mi. MIOTO is mined using a Proof-of-Work consensus algorithm without miners and fees. MIOTA can be bought from a wide range of crypto exchanges such as Binance and HitBTC.
